BUILDING A FORMIDABLE MARRIAGE
(Genesis 11:1, 4-6 KJV)
“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”
A formidable marriage is possible. A strong marriage is not a science fiction, neither is it rocket science. God Himself has said that all things are possible to him that believes. So it begins with believing that it is possible and it will begin to happen, first in your heart and then it will manifest for all to see.
God Himself confessed that a people would be unstoppable with the way they were going about their project in our text. He said “nothing they had imagined to do would be impossible to them”. Why did He say so? They were of one language and one speech. The following are the full importance of our text today:
i. A marriage is formidable when the couple can get their communication right.
The beginning of a great marriage is in great communication. They know how to talk, they know how to respond to each other, etc. Let it be known to you that communication will go out of hand when the couple do not have respect for each other. So, they must have learnt mutual respect. They must have learnt the principle of listening, without which communication will never be successful. They must know how to engage the principle of fair hearing for them to succeed at communication.
ii. The next lesson this passage teaches is the principle of Agreement.
There is no way they would have been able to pull the kind of feat they did to even impress God if they didn’t establish the principle of agreement. No marriage is formidable where there is no agreement. To agree is to decide on a common goal and a common road to that goal. To agree is to unify energy and resources to form a synergy for greater works and accomplishments. Agreement works where selfishness dies, and it is possible when pride is allowed to go. Married couples who succeed in agreement have learnt to be teachable; That is why a wife will willingly follow her husband’s lead, and the husbands will not feel bad about taking on the wife’s lead sometimes.
These were the two reasons why God said they would be unstoppable. I decree an unstoppable marriage for you in Jesus Name.
