THE VOICE OF GOD

1 Kings 19:11-13 KJV
“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord ; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah”?

In the school of the Spirit, one of the hallmarks of students is the ability to discern and know the voice of God in the midst of noise and confusion. If the voice of God was so easy to know then everyone would discern it and walk accurately. But there are dynamics to filtering the voice of God in our lives and in today’s world of many voices and distractions. Elijah’s experience is a case study as to how to discern God’s voice.

Elijah was waiting on the Lord on the mountain and then a strong wind rent the mountains, and a great wind broke the rock in pieces before the Lord but the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was neither in the fire as well. These were all spectacular manifestations of the move of the Spirit of God, and most people would immediately conclude that they had seen the power of God or the move of His Spirit. But we confirm now that God was not in any of them.

Then there was a still small voice. And when Elijah heard this voice, he went a step further to truly ascertain the voice to be sure that it was truly the Spirit of God that was speaking to him. He did that by wrapping his head in his mantle, to block out other voices, shut out all forms of distractions. Then, he left his position to somewhere else, and this was the entering of the cave. It seemed like he needed to move to a place where the signal was loudest, he changed position to a place of clarity. And there, he heard a voice saying to him “what are you doing here”? I want you to appreciate the steps and moves that Elijah had to make to ascertain the voice of God in his life. See the action of wrapping his head, and the action of changing location to a better place. So it is in the things of the Spirit; you may need to change location or go somewhere of minimal or zero distractions to clearly hear God. Receive grace and hearing for the voice of God today in Jesus Name.

Action Points
i. Seek to hear God’s voice today.
ii. Be determined and make moves to separate yourself to a quiet and less distracting place.
iii. Shut out all the many voices in your head today so as to pick the signals of God’s voice in your life.

Prayer
-Lord, I present myself to you today.
-Lord, please clarify your voice to me in Jesus Name.
-I receive grace to shut out all forms of distractions from my life in Jesus Name.

Nugget
There are dynamics to filtering the voice of God; you may need to change location or go somewhere of minimal or zero distractions to clearly hear God.
