THE MYSTERY OF PRAYING IN TONGUES

(1 Corinthians 14:16-17 KJV)
“Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified”.

The discussions of Paul the apostle on the subject of tongues was not against prayer but prophesying. It was common place in the church at Corinth to see people who would stand up during the service to give a word of prophecy, word of knowledge and even a word of prophecy in tongues; mostly without any interpreter. Paul frowned at it, and asked them to pray or prophesy in the understanding of all rather than tongues, and they should only do so in tongues when there is an interpreter. But Paul never discouraged praying in tongues, because when you pray in tongues, your spirit prays and your understanding is unfruitful.

The above text shows one of Paul’s arguments on this subject. He said when you bless in the spirit, the unlearned will not understand what you are saying. You are actually giving thanks, but the other does not know when to say, “Amen!”. This reveals a mystery of praying in tongues, and that is the fact that contained in it is thanksgiving. This is a mystery, and this makes tongues a multipurpose tool for prayer.

So, when under pressure, you get to burst into tongues without time to thank God in your understanding, you may have already thanked God in the spirit. Be reminded that Thanksgiving is a primary non-negotiable way to come into God’s presence; (See, Psalm 100:4). Remember also that Paul taught us to give thanks in all things, for it is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus. So, when we pray in tongues, we automatically give thanks and we are positioned in God’s will as a result. Praise God forever. What a blessing to pray in tongues! Can you begin to pray in tongues for the next one minute. Hallelujah!!!

(Watch out for the second part of this teaching)
