WHY PEOPLE DIVORCE
(Matthew 19:7-8 KJV)
“They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.”
People will give all manner of reasons for their divorce cases. But the word of God is our final reference point, and it has said clearly that divorces are caused by the hardness of heart of people. A hardened heart firstly has lost all forms of spiritual sensitivity. Whenever you hear of a hardened heart you are looking at a situation where the person has lost all manner of sensitivity and response to God. His spiritual life is dead and the word of God no longer causes him or her to tremble and fear anymore. He or she would have lost all the fear of God they once had.
Secondly, a hardened heart has lost all forms of human sympathy. When you see a man abuse his wife to wicked dimensions, you are looking at a hardened heart, where human sympathy has been lost. It is almost the same kind of heart in an animal who feels no sympathy for its prey. The lion will tear the baby deer without mercy, because it was created to be wild and without sympathy. What differentiates us from animals is that human sympathy, which is a nature of God within us. When that is lost in man or woman in marriage, then divorce becomes inevitable.
Thirdly, a hardened heart will refuse to change or make adjustment to suit the other partner. They will insist on living life the way they have always lived it regardless of how it hurts their partner. Now, that is a hardened heart and it is calling for a divorce. Marriage is a place of constant adjustments and change’ and when you refuse to make changes and adjustments then you are hardened, and your marriage may end in eventual divorce. Because three is a limit to human endurance. A spouse whose heart has become hardened is calling for divorce directly or indirectly.
Has your heart become hardened? Think again.
